CHARLES WILLIAM STUART
was born c.1811 in London (possibly the illegitimate son of Rear Admiral Sir Charles Cunningham 1755-1834).
He died on June 22nd, 1891, aged 80 at Adelaide SA.194/284 (informant not recorded)
Charles W. STUART arrived in Adelaide on board the TAM O'SHANTER on November 26th, 1836.


Charles STUART married on March 5th, 1842 to Sarah ALLEN (aged 18 years 5 months, daughter of Thomas Allen and Sarah nee Weaver).
She also came to Adelaide in 1836 on board the TAM O'SHANTER with her parents and her siblings. Apparently Charles Stuart had courted her assiduously. The marriage notice in the South Australian Gazette & Colonial Register of 12 March 1842 gives Thomas Allen's address as Walkerville.
Sarah died about 1869 at Adelaide after a married life of poverty, hardship, child bearing and raising a large family.

From the diary of CW Stuart:
            It appears that in 1842 the Allen family was raising cattle. In 1843 Amelia Allen registered the letter "A" as a cattle brand.
August 18th, 1842: "Some person, whom I suspect to be Thomas Allen, came last night and fetched away 2 of the cows and calves
            left with me for sale by Charlotte. After breakfast I rode down to RICHMOND and reprimanded him for his conduct."
Sept 13th, 1842: "Joe Allen came out to bid us farewell as he leaves for Hobart Town tomorrow.
            I bought off him 3 yearling steers, 1 calf for £3-0-0 and resold 2 steers for £5-5/-."
Unfortunately CW Stuart's diary ends on December 14th, 1843.

CHARLES WILLIAM STUART speculated in land, dealt in livestock and borrowed heavily to finance his deals with the inevitable result
            that he ended up in near bankruptcy.
1850: He was saved, albeit temporarily, by being appointed an Inspector of the Adelaide Metropolitan Police in 1850
1852: appointed Senior Inspector of Mounted Police and Gold Escort in 1852.
1853: He was dismissed from the police in late 1853 for insubordination
            and moved with his wife and family to Melbourne where he worked as the Sheriff's bailiff.
1862: The family returned to Adelaide

Sarah and Charles Stuart had twelve children. Family research suggests the last was born in 1864.
